Disney World: On-site Versus Off-site

May 10, 2019      Disney, Travel      Leave a Comment

Staying on Walt Disney World property versus off-property is one of those debates where there will never be a clear winner. When people ask me for advice on where to stay at Disney World, my answer is always the same: it depends on what you want to do on your vacation. I’m going to try and approach this as unbiased as possible, but keep in mind, you and I may vacation a little differently. Personally, I’m an on-property kind of vacationer. We go to the parks everyday and rarely spend much time at our hotel, so convenience is our priority. Staying on-property is generally more expensive, but there are ways to keep the cost down. Recently, Nick and I have stayed in the cheapest hotel that was available on-property when booking. I also think that the extra costs are worth the convenience, but that’s what we look for. I also have quite a bit of experience staying off-property as well, and that also comes with its own perks.

On Disney World property:

  • More Disney magic: It’s true that once you cross the Walt Disney World border, you enter into a Disney bubble. Everything around you is themed to perfection and you never feel like you’ve left the magic. It has the feel of being in a completely different city which gives you the feeling that you have escaped the real world. When staying on-property, you get to experience the Disney magic even when you leave the parks.
  • Dining plans: Nick and I have historically used Disney’s Dining Plan which has been extremely convenient and saved us a couple hundred dollars each trip. Now, there are only two of us, and we both are adventurous eaters, so the Dining Plan has very much paid off in our experience. I recognize that a large family with several small children who are picky eaters may not get as much use out of it, but that is different with every family. It is also super nice not having to worry about your wallet and being able to track your meals and snacks on your Magic Band.
  • Free transportation: The Disney buses run constantly from every location (resorts, parks, Disney Springs) and back throughout the day. This is a great option to avoid paying to park at the parks and the insane traffic that comes along with that. This also eliminates the need to rent a car if you are flying into Orlando. Disney has free transportation to and from the airport at their resorts so no need to worry about getting an Uber. Some off-site hotels will provide shuttles to the parks during the day, but not all. Be sure to look into that if you choose an off-site option. In addition, Nick and I like to enjoy a glass of wine or cocktail while on vacation and we never have to worry about how we’re getting back to our hotel.
  • Extra Magic Hours: Disney World gives guests staying in their hotels the benefit of an extra hour before or after regular park hours. The times are different each day and are for one park a day, so be sure to keep your eye on the park hours. The extra time in the parks allows for more time to get on rides without as much of the crowds. It’s a great time to go on the busiest rides and enjoy the park with less people in it.
  • Fastpass advantage: For regular guests, Fastpasses are able to be reserved up to 30 days before the trip. For Disney Resort guests, however, Fastpasses can be booked up to 60 days in advance. This is extra helpful for the newer thrill rides that book fast – Flight of Passage and Slinky Dog Dash, for example. To get a Fastpass for these rides, you have to book it 60 days in advance, or you won’t get it. I myself have been online at 7 am on the 60 day mark before our trips and have struggled to get the good rides. Staying in the Disney Resorts is such a benefit for those who are really looking forward to the newer more popular rides. It could be the difference between getting a Fastpass for them, or having to wait in extremely long lines to ride them.

Off Disney World Property:

  • Cheaper options: It is no secret that Disney is expensive. Staying off-property allows you to find cheaper hotel options than even the cheapest Disney Resort. You do have to factor in the cost of parking at the theme parks or a rental car if necessary. Parking for the day costs $25, so be sure to factor that in to the difference in hotel costs or look for a hotel that provides shuttles to the parks. Staying off-property is a great option for those who do not intend to go to the parks everyday and are looking to save money. For Nick and I, we are everyday park people, so in the long run, paying for parking everyday would make it more expensive than staying on-property.
  • Cheap meals: In the past, I have stayed at condos off-property where we were able to stock up the kitchen and make our own meals. This can save you A TON of money. Disney food is great, but very pricey. A quick grocery shopping trip at the start of your vacation can save you a lot. We would stock up on things like bagels and granola bars for breakfast, take in waters and bananas with us to the parks for snacks, and usually get dinner in the parks if we were there all day. This is also a great option if you do not expect to spend all day at the parks. When we were younger, especially, we could not make it for twelve hours straight in a theme park without at least taking a nap in the middle. We would eat breakfast in the condo before going to the parks, take a midday break and have an early dinner at the condo before heading back to the parks for the remainder of the night. All around, a huge money saver.

Whichever option you choose, you will have a great time no matter what. There are huge pros with both staying on or off property and they both come with their own cons as well. Really think about what will be the priorities for your family and what will benefit your vacation style the best. Does anyone have any additional benefits to staying on or off Disney property? The Best Lake Michigan Towns To Explore On Your Next Beach Day

May 3, 2019      Travel      2 Comments

It’s May in southern Michigan, you know what that means; no more freak blizzards to endure and the warmer weather is here to stay – if we’re lucky. Sometimes – and by that, I mean all the time – I wonder why I live here. But then the warmer spring weather swoops in to remind me how wonderful this place is during the warmer months. One of my favorite weekend getaways in the spring and summer consists of driving out to Lake Michigan to a cute beach town to relax and explore. To those who have never seen Lake Michigan, I feel sorry for you and you should change that. It’s like the ocean, but different. The sand is still soft and you can’t see the other side, but the water is calmer and not salty. My whole life, my family and friends have gone and enjoyed the cute beach towns on Michigan’s side of Lake Michigan and all that they offer. I’ve been to so many, but these three towns I’m going to talk about are my favorites for various reasons. Disclaimer: I’m excluding Traverse City because, well, that’ll get its own post – or five. So. If you’re looking for a great weekend getaway, here are my favorite Lake Michigan towns that I recommend you check out.

Grand Haven – Located west of Grand Rapids, the adorable Coast Guard City USA is full of restaurants and shops in its downtown as well as stretches of beach along its state park. Grand Haven is somewhere that I’ve gone in all seasons – walking on frozen sand is quite fun, highly recommend – but for the full experience, definitely go in the summer. The state park has camping right on the lake, close to Grand Haven’s pier and lighthouses. You can also enjoy boating, fishing, biking, and hiking through the expanse of outdoor trails. The Rosy Mound Natural Area in Grand Haven is a gorgeous dune that offers beautiful views of the woods and beach on Lake Michigan. For those looking to relax, the Grand Haven State Park is a lovely beach right near the Grand Haven South Pierhead Lighthouse. My favorite part of Grand Haven, however, is the downtown. It has several local restaurants and cafes to enjoy as well as some great shopping. The shops range from cute beachy souvenir shops to high-end clothing stores. Make sure to check out The Kirby House for some live music or Dee-Lite Bar and Grill for a fun modern diner atmosphere.

Holland – Holland is another adorable town that borders Lake Macatawa which is off of Lake Michigan. It was first founded by Dutch settlers escaping religious persecution and the heritage is a huge part of the town. Every Spring, they have their local Tulip Time Festival which attracts one million people every year. During Tulip Time, the entire city is adorned in tulips. They have the Windmill Island Gardens, where you can tour a working windmill and view the gorgeous tulips in the spring. The best public beach, in my opinion, is the Holland State Park, you can take a trip there for the day or you can camp there as well. From the Holland State Park beach, you can see the Holland Harbor and Holland Harbor Lighthouse – or Big Red – across the harbor to the south. On the drive to and from the beach, I highly recommend the Ottawa Beach Inn. It’s such a cute nautical themed restaurant that specializes in American food and seafood. For more restaurants and shopping, along 8th Street is the city’s downtown. My personal favorite is New Holland Brewing. They have great food for sure, but their beer is some of my absolute favorite – Dragon’s Milk anyone?

Saugatuck – I saved my favorite for last and that would be the beach town of Saugatuck. Saugatuck has a pretty large downtown area that borders the Kalamazoo River near the edge of Lake Michigan. It’s the most lively and bustling town of the three, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have that small beach town feel. Downtown Saugatuck is filled with Art Galleries and unique shops that attract tourists from all over. There are several restaurants; nice and fancy options such as Coral Gables or more relaxed bar and grill options such as Wally’s – each two of my favorites. You can take a river boat ride down the Kalamazoo River or walk along the dock and watch the yachts pull right up to downtown. To relax on the beach, Oval Beach is the best for relaxing along beautiful coastline of white sand beach. A little farther north, Saugatuck Dunes State Park is one of my favorites. To get to the dunes, you have to hike a little through marked trails through the woods. It is totally worth it though and not super grueling – although just be aware that you do have to walk a bit, we were completely ill-prepared the first time we went and did not realize how far it was. There are several different trails that you can take through the State Park and many different options based on what you want to do. Once you get to the beach, you can climb down the dunes to a stretch of a beautiful 2.5 mile beach. The dunes are gorgeous and tower behind you as you stare out over Lake Michigan. It’s also one of my favorite places to watch the sunset.

So if you’re planning a day trip or a weekend getaway, you really can’t go wrong with Lake Michigan’s beach towns. There are so many options to choose from and I had a hard time narrowing it down to my top three. Lake Michigan is so gorgeous and is comparable to the ocean. If you live in the midwest, and need a beach vacation that is slightly closer to home than the ocean, Lake Michigan is the place for you. I am so lucky to have it so close to me and can’t recommend it enough. What do you think? If you’ve been to any of the towns on Michigan’s side of Lake Michigan, let me know where you went in the comments below!
