As someone who has gotten settled in their career in the last few years, I am just now starting to have the funds to travel internationally. I have always made taking vacations a priority, even if that meant just a short trip to Lake Michigan or a road-trip to Florida, but as I am paying off more and more of my student loans and I have more income available for fun stuff, I am starting to really catch a travel bug. I was fortunate as a kid to travel to some pretty awesome locations with my family – my parents are rightfully obsessed with the Caribbean so I am quite versed on traveling to various locations there. Because I’ve been there a lot, I didn’t include any locations in the Caribbean and only included new international places. So without further adieu, here are my top international travel bucket list destinations:
Croatia – This one didn’t get on my radar until recently but Croatia is slowly becoming a more mainstream travel destination. With it’s gorgeous Dalmatian Coast and historical cities, it’s easy to see why. I am so excited to one day explore the old walled city of Dubrovnik, see the mountainous views, and shop the old ports. What excites me about Croatia, too, is that you can explore the history of the country, while also visiting the gorgeous national parks, and also relax on the beach. I’m also excited to visit the more urban city Split and see the ocean views that it offers as well as the Roman ruins.
Norway – Norway looks so beautiful. With the towering fjords and mountains, it’s definitely somewhere that I need to see for myself. The scenery is so enticing – valleys, forests, glaciers – the list goes on. While I am well aware that a trip to Scandinavia is going to be filled with exploring the outdoors and scenery, I also can’t wait to experience the culture. Bergen, an old port town, looks so intriguing with it’s maritime heritage and the Hanseatic quarter Bryggen. Bryggen is complete with wooden houses and nordic architecture that I would love to see and learn more about.
France – I have been dreaming about going to France my whole life. I am definitely interested in the touristy aspect of it but also want to explore what life is like there. Of course I want to go to Paris. The Eiffel Tower is something that I can’t wait to see and have always dreamed about but that is only the start. Paris is somewhere that I could spend an entire two-week trip in, seeing the touristy attractions like the Louvre, Versailles, and Notre Dame. I would also love to just explore and get lost in Paris for days. I could wander and try out the local cafes and shop at the markets. Additionally, I want to see the French Riviera with it’s gorgeous coastal cities and ports. I also want to hike the amazing Calanques on the Mediterranean. I would also love to take a few days and relax in a small town in France and really get to know the local places. And of course for this Disney lover – Disneyland Paris anyone?
Morocco – The Moroccan culture is so different from mine in the US and is one that I would love to learn more about. The architecture and history are fascinating and I can’t wait to one day see the city of Marrakech and explore all that it has to offer. I would love to explore the souks in the Medina and see the gorgeous courtyards of Marrakech. The largest mosque in Marrakech, Koutoubia Mosque, looks absolutely beautiful and is definitely on my list of places to visit in the city. To escape the hustle and bustle, the gorgeous garden – the Jardin Majorelle – looks amazing. I also would love to take a tour into the Sahara and see the desert, maybe even under the stars.
Switzerland – I don’t think that there are any Switzerland tourist staples that I don’t want to do. I am drawn to the beautiful landscape and outdoor adventures that the country offers. I would love to spend several days in the Alps, both in a small mountain town soaking up the culture, and in a ski resort relaxing and taking in the scenery. I also of course want to explore the other cities and towns, especially in the Berner Oberland – Interlaken and Grindelwald. I also really want to go to Luzern and see the old picturesque towns in central Switzerland as well as visit Zürich and see the old churches and architecture. And of course eat plenty of cheese and chocolate!
Singapore – I cannot wait to go to Singapore one day. I am so intrigued by the bustling metropolitan city. The art and architecture that Singapore has to offer is so fascinating and I want to see it and learn more about it. I want to, of course, see the Gardens by the Bay, marvel at the giant Supertrees, and watch the nighttime Garden Rhapsody. I also want to see the Botanic Gardens, the photos that I’ve seen of them are gorgeous and I would love to go myself. I also would love to learn more about the history of Singapore and would love to explore the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and visit the historic sites of the Colonial District. Of course, I definitely want to experience the nightlife and shopping that the city has to offer as well.
I definitely am eager to get to these places over the next couple of years but those are just the beginning. As time goes on and I learn and travel more, I’m sure the list will change and grow. What do you think about my choices? What countries are on your travel bucket list?
